Please rescue me...

Why do people not understand the simple concept that government should not meddle in the free market?

The New York City Board of Health voted unanimously Tuesday to require all city chain restaurants to post calorie data on their menus.

If people really wanted to know this then they would lobby for it by contacting the restaurant. While the cost of putting this will be minimal, the cost will just be passed to the consumer, which of course will raise food tax revenue, etc. After all it wasn't until recently that Quizno's posted calories of their products on the web and they still refuse to let consumer know what ingredients they use. Is Quizno's hurting? I don't think so...it's because for the most part people don't care about knowing this data much less does it sway them for the most part to change their eating habits.

Furthermore, doesn't this discriminate? Why should Burger King or Taco Bell have to post their calories but not Ruth's Chris? Finally, I haven't read the legislation, but I assume that the definition of chain isn't explained very well thus Ruth's Chris might have to be put into the same category as Taco Bell.

Regardless, adults are adults and the state should not treat them as kids. By doing so they just dumb us down more.

First it was nutritional information and ingredients must be listed, then they told us what we could eat when the ban on duck liver occurred (in some cities), they ban smoking in restaurants, and now they want this. What's next?

Canadian Thought Police aka Human Rights Officers

And all along, I thought that our country loved Big Brother...

What a Strange Place Canada is

A few days ago, I was interrogated for 90 minutes by Shirlene McGovern, an officer of the government of Alberta. I have been accused of hurting people's feelings because, two years ago, I published the Danish cartoons of Mohammed in the Western Standard magazine.

Ms. McGovern's business card said she was a "Human Rights Officer." What a perfectly Orwellian title.

CALL TO ACTION! GET OUT THE VOTE!

Today is primary day in the Live Free or Die state. Please get out and vote today for the only person running for president that will uphold the constitution and has a long standing record of doing so.

If you are new to the primary, here is a quick breakdown:
You basically go in, and let them know who you are if you are already registered. If not, you can register at the polls with any proof of address. Then you are given a ballot (D or R if you are registered such), or asked which primary you would like to vote in if you are an Ind. You are handed a ballot, go into a booth, mark it in for Ron Paul, come out and hand it to the person collecting ballots in towns or put it in the counting machines in cities, then if you were registered Ind going in, you can switch back to Ind on your way out the door. You then go home. Easy!

  • Where is my polling place? Click here; and call NH GOP to verify if you would like at 603.225.9341.
  • What if I'm not registered to vote? Well, thankfully you live in New Hampshire where they respect your freedoms. You may register and vote today. You will be required to fill out a standard voter registration form and will be required to show proof of age, citizenship and domicile. YOU NEED TO BRING PROOF OF ADDRESS.
  • Do not wear any Ron Paul apparel as some wards make it against "their rules" and they may deny your right to vote.
  • If there is a exit pollster please talk to them as you exit. This will shape the coverage tonight when they begin reporting the NH results.
  • If you are a student attending college in New Hampshire, click here for more information.

NH Liberty Alliance Bill Review Training

The NH 2008 Legislative Session has already started (January 2nd) and the next House session is scheduled for the 16th of January.

During the last year, the movement for freedom has grown substantially with the help of Ron Paul and the number liberty activists in the Free State of New Hampshire. To continue to bring the message of freedom to people, and of course to ensure that we prevent our liberties from being stripped away we must remain vigilant in our revolution.

One method of doing this is to join the NH Liberty Alliance; and this Saturday you can attend the Bill Review training session. The training is scheduled from 2pm-4pm at the Reagan Network Office located at 134 North Main Street, Concord, NH.

Furthermore, if this is new to you or are unaware of what the NHLA has done in the past, please check out their 2007 Report Cards.

Botched Paramilitary Police Raids

Just browsing the web and came across this page on Cato.

The page outlines a map of the U.S. that has a list along with news stories of police raids that went bad for the citizen. Currently there are 299 "incidents."
From the site...

What does the map mean?

The proliferation of SWAT teams, police militarization, and the Drug War have given rise to a dramatic increase in the number of "no-knock" or "quick-knock" raids on suspected drug offenders. Because these raids are often conducted based on tips from notoriously unreliable confidential informants, police sometimes conduct SWAT-style raids on the wrong home, or on the homes of nonviolent, misdemeanor drug users. Such highly-volatile, overly confrontational tactics are bad enough when no one is hurt -- it's difficult to imagine the terror an innocent suspect or family faces when a SWAT team mistakenly breaks down their door in the middle of the night.

But even more disturbing are the number of times such "wrong door" raids unnecessarily lead to the injury or death of suspects, bystanders, and police officers. Defenders of SWAT teams and paramilitary tactics say such incidents are isolated and rare. The map below aims to refute that notion.

U.S. Congressman Carol Shea-Porter

I received a piece of mail today from Congressman Shea-Porter today, that just blew my mind (I do apologize for the poor quality of the scan).

  • the document is in full color
  • it is larger than the mailings that I have received from the presidential candidates
  • it is 4 pages (it opens up); this is more information than the presidential candidates have sent out
  • and the best part is found on page 4...it states: "This mailing was prepared, published, and mailed at taxpayer expense."
Did you see that last one? "This mailing was prepared, published, and mailed at taxpayer expense."

It also states that I can join her email newsletter "so you can hear it first and save a tree." Interesting, I didn't ask to be on this mailing list, and secondly from what I can tell this wasn't printed on recycled paper. Amazing.

Then, let's open up and get down to some of the issues.

Now, I am not going to read each one of these bills to verify that the summaries provided on the mailing are accurate. However, if you wish to do so, I have put a link to each bill for your review.

HR2669: The College Cost Reduction Cost. (signed into law according to mailing)
  • Summary from mailing: "Reduces interest rates on student loans and provides loan forgiveness for those who agree to become teachers."
  • My thoughts: First off, the federal government should have no involvement in providing student loans. Not only is this unconstitutional, which should be enough to not only not vote for this, but to create a bill to stop the Stafford Loans, etc, but it perpetuates the involvement of the fed and the free market. The second comment is about giving those whom become teachers a free pass on our tax dollar. I don't remember giving that handout? Now these teachers are going to be "forced" to teach what big brother wants them to each and this just creates a government school, even more controlled by the government rather than the state or community. Hell, I'm against public schools all together so this really chaps my ass.
HR2: Minimum Wage Increase (signed into law according to mailing)
  • Summary from mailing: "First increase in the minimum wage in ten years from $5.15 to $7.25."
  • My thoughts: Ah ha! Here comes the invisible foot (sorry Adam Smith), the federal government getting involved in the market place again. This will only raise the cost of goods and companies will pass that cost onto the consumer. The right thing to do would have been vote against this and to create a bill to abolish the minimum wage laws all together.

HR1: Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007 (signed into law according to mailing)
  • Summary from mailing: "Provides for implementation of recommendations of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (9/11 Commission)."
  • My thoughts: Who wants to vote against legislation that will save and protect America? I do! Just more freedoms and civil liberties being taken away. I'm sure that if I read the entire bill that I could find at least one unconstitutional item.

HR2776: Renewable Energy and Conservation Tax Act (signed into law according to mailing)
  • Summary from mailing: "Lowers energy costs, increases vehicle fuel efficiency."
  • My thoughts: The invisible foot strikes again! The federal government gets involved with fuel efficiency in vehicles? I can guarantee you that this is not a power that the constitution grants.

HR976: Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) Reauthorization Act (vetoed twice by President Bush according to mailing)
  • Summary from mailing: "Would have provided health care coverage for additional four million low-income children."
  • My thoughts: Bush finally does something correct! He used that veto pen. It is not the responsibility of the federal government to provide health care coverage for anybody.

HR4: Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act (President Bush has threatened to veto according to mailing)
  • Summary from mailing: "Would require the federal government to negotiate lower prescription drug prices for seniors in Medicare."
  • My thoughts: I hope he does veto the bill! Again, the federal government getting involved in free market.

HR3996: Temporary Tax Relief Act (passed by Congress according to mailing)
  • Summary from mailing: "Protects 23 million middle class families from the Alternative Minimum Tax"
  • My thoughts: Assuming, that his reduces taxes and nothing else then it's a good bill.

So, I have not read the bills here as I stated earlier. The bills are quite lengthy and my original intent of this post was to show that our tax dollars were being used for
